How to Move Crypto from Newton to a Hardware Wallet
Newton's zero-fee withdrawal model makes it the cheapest way for Canadians to fund a hardware wallet โ but their 24-hour whitelist hold catches people off guard. Here's the full walkthrough.

Why Newton is the best-value Canadian on-ramp to cold storage
Newton charges zero withdrawal feeson all cryptocurrencies. You pay only the on-chain network fee, which Newton passes through at cost. For Bitcoin, that's typically $18 CAD; for Ethereum-based tokens, $3-15; for Solana, cents. Compared to Bitbuy's bundled network fee (which historically runs 20-30% above spot network cost), Newton saves the average Canadian $50-200 per withdrawal.
The catch: Newton uses a 24-hour address whitelist hold on your first withdrawal to any new address. This is a security feature and it works โ but it means you should plan a two-day timeline for your first cold-storage move.
What you need
- A funded Newton account.
- A hardware wallet โ start with the Ledger Nano X if you don't already have one.
- The companion app (Ledger Live, Trezor Suite, or Tangem app) on desktop.
Step 1 โ Initialize the hardware wallet
Follow the setup process for your specific device. Non-negotiable items:
- Update firmware BEFORE generating a seed phrase.
- Generate the seed on the device, never on a computer.
- Write the seed on a metal backup plate (Billfodl, Cryptosteel, SafePal Cypher).
- Verify the seed by re-entering it when the device asks.

Step 2 โ Get your receive address
In Ledger Live / Trezor Suite: click the coin account โ Receive โ verify the address on the device screen. The address on the computer and the device must be identical, character for character.
Step 3 โ Add the address to Newton's whitelist
On Newton's web app: Settings โ Crypto Withdrawal Addresses โ Add New. Enter a label (e.g. "My Ledger BTC"), paste the address, and confirm with 2FA. You'll get an email confirmation.
Newton starts a 24-hour holdduring which you can't send to the new address. This is the security window that protects you if your account is compromised โ an attacker who added their own address couldn't withdraw for 24 hours, giving you time to notice and reset your account.
Step 4 โ Send the test transaction
After 24 hours: Portfolio โ the coin โ Send โ select the whitelisted address โ send $10-20 CAD worth. Confirm with 2FA.
Wait for confirmations. Bitcoin: 10-60 min. Ethereum: 2-5 min. Solana: under 30 sec.
Step 5 โ Send the full balance
Once the test arrives in your hardware wallet app, repeat step 4 with the full remaining balance. Newton has no daily withdrawal cap on whitelisted addresses.
Step 6 โ Record for the CRA
Save the transaction hashes from Newton's withdrawal history (Account โ History โ Export CSV). This is your audit trail proving the transfer was a non-taxable custody change and not a disposition. See our CRA cold-storage section for what to keep.
Newton vs Bitbuy โ which is better for cold-storage funding?
Newton for cost โ zero withdrawal fees save you $50-200 per transaction.
Bitbuy for immediacy โ no 24-hour whitelist hold on withdrawals to your own addresses.
Most cold-storage-oriented Canadians we know use Newton for long-term DCA (accumulate on Newton, withdraw quarterly to cold storage) and Bitbuy only for tax-lot-specific sells.
