Ledger vs Tangem — Which Should Canadians Buy?
Two wildly different products at the same-ish price. Ledger is a traditional pocket device with a screen and buttons. Tangem is a stack of NFC smart cards. Both work, both are secure — but they're aimed at completely different Canadian buyers.

- Buy Tangem if this is your first hardware wallet, if you hate the idea of managing a 24-word seed phrase, or if you want a set-and-forget cold-storage solution that works from your phone. Best for positions under $50k CAD.
- Buy Ledger Nano X if you use DeFi (MetaMask/Uniswap/Aave), if you want on-device address verification, if you hold obscure altcoins, or if you plan to eventually run multisig. Best for positions above $10k CAD and for anyone who wants an industry-standard device.

The seedless-versus-seed philosophical divide
This is really the whole comparison. Every traditional hardware wallet — Ledger, Trezor, BitBox, Coldcard, NGRAVE — generates a 12-, 20-, or 24-word recovery phrase that YOU must write down and store safely. If you lose that phrase, you lose the crypto. If someone else finds it, they take the crypto. The seed phrase is both the strongest security primitive in the space AND the single biggest cause of catastrophic loss.
Tangem eliminates the seed phrase entirely. The private key is generated inside the secure element chip of the first card, then copied to identical backup cards during initial setup. You never see, type, or store a 24-word phrase. The physical cards ARE the seed.
This is either brilliant simplification or a step backwards depending on your worldview. If you think you might survive a 10-year window of remembering to keep 24 handwritten words safe in a metal plate, Ledger's approach is cheaper long-term and gives you cross-vendor recoverability. If you know yourself well enough to admit that seed-phrase management is a real risk, Tangem removes that risk at the cost of ecosystem lock-in.
DeFi and MetaMask — the deal-breaker for many buyers
If you use MetaMask (which means: Uniswap, Aave, Compound, Curve, any Uniswap fork, most Ethereum DeFi, Base, Optimism, Arbitrum), you need MetaMask hardware wallet support. Ledger has it. Tangem does not.
Tangem's own app supports basic sends, swaps, and staking, but you can't connect it to Uniswap or Aave. If your holdings are purely long-term Bitcoin, ETH, and a few altcoins, this doesn't matter. If you actively yield-farm, arbitrage, or use L2 protocols, Tangem is a non-starter.
The Canadian buying reality
- Ledger Nano X: $223 CAD direct from Ledger.com. Also stocked by Best Buy Canada (often $130-$150 CAD on sale) and Amazon.ca (if sold by Amazon.ca directly, not marketplace).
- Tangem Wallet: $79-$90 CAD direct from Tangem.com. Amazon.ca stocks it too. Not currently at Best Buy Canada.
Our final recommendation
If you are picking your first hardware wallet, hold under $50k CAD, and don't plan to use DeFi, buy Tangem — the seedless design will save you from the mistake that gets 90% of hardware wallet losses.
If you are moving a larger position, hold altcoins, or use DeFi, buy the Ledger Nano X — the ecosystem support is worth the extra $140 CAD, and you keep the option to graduate to multisig later.
