The 30-second answer

  1. Best overall: Ledger Nano X โ€” $223 CAD. Native XRP support in Ledger Live, best security + Bluetooth mobile signing.
  2. Best budget: Tangem Wallet โ€” $79 CAD. NFC card, no seed phrase, XRP supported natively.
  3. Best value: Ledger Nano S Plus โ€” $105 CAD. Same secure element as the Nano X, no Bluetooth.

Why XRP needs its own guide

XRP is not like Bitcoin or Ethereum for cold storage. Three things make it special:

  • 20 XRP account reserve. The XRP Ledger requires a minimum balance of 20 XRP (~$60-70 CAD at 2026 prices) to keep the account "activated." This is permanently locked โ€” you can never withdraw below 20 XRP without deactivating the account.
  • Destination tags. Most exchanges use a "destination tag" alongside the XRP address to route deposits to the right customer. Send to your hardware wallet with no tag โ€” you own the address alone.
  • Reserve increase risk. The XRP Ledger's base reserve has changed before (dropped from 20 โ†’ 10 โ†’ 1 XRP in various proposals). Check xrpl.org/reserves.html for the current value.

Setup gotchas specific to XRP

  1. Send 25+ XRP as the first transfer to activate your account (20 reserve + a few extra as buffer). Sending less than 20 XRP to a fresh address will fail โ€” the transaction bounces and you pay the network fee for nothing.
  2. Do NOT include a destination tagwhen withdrawing from a Canadian exchange to your hardware wallet. The exchange's withdrawal form may pre-fill or ask for one โ€” leave it blank. Destination tags are for exchange-hosted wallets, not personal ones.
  3. Test with $10-20 first. Same as every other crypto โ€” always send a test amount before the full balance.

Where to buy XRP in Canada

CRA reporting for XRP holders

Same rules as any other cryptocurrency in Canada. Moving XRP from an exchange to your hardware wallet is not a taxable event. Selling XRP for CAD, trading XRP for another crypto, or spending XRP is a disposition and triggers capital gains reporting. See our CRA cold-storage section.
